Travelife is a world wide independent auditor working on behalf of the International Federation of Tour Operators, which represents 13 national associations in Europe. Travelife audit all the various aspects of the hospitality industry, including hotels. TUI Netherlands initated and paid for an audit at KonTiki in February this year. The award was given after an on-site inspection by an auditor of Travel Service International Solutions, followed by a series of questions to ensure that the benchmarks and criteria established are met.

The audit consisted of an extensive accommodation checklist on the following topics:
- Responsible/Sustainable Tourism policy
- Environmental Management
- Energy
- Water
- Waste
- Purchasing
- Community Support
- Staff Issues
- Customer Communications

KonTiki achieved a total of 479 points out of a maximum of 492, and this high score determined the achievement of the gold award. Participating tourism organizations can automatically reflect the award status with a logo in their brochures, on websites and in other marketing materials. The driving force behind KonTiki’s successful application were owners Miriam & Martin van Bekkum.  We feel it is extremely satisfying to achieve such a prestigious award.
